AN OVERVIEW
Title Project Nightingales
Role Project Lead and Strategist, Design Researcher, Lead Facilitator
Duration 8 months, full-time (August '22 - March '23)
Organisation Noora Health
Project Nightingales started out as fieldwork by the Product team, who were developing a mobile app to upskill and engage our nurses serving as health educators. However, as the team conducted their research, they repeatedly encountered a critical question: "Do we really know our nurses?"
It soon became apparent to the team that an app alone could not answer this question, and that a more comprehensive solution was needed. To address this issue, the Product team approached the Caregiving Lab to lead a design research project.
PROCESS
We conducted interviews with 10 participants, including nurses in three rural towns across India, staff at two private hospitals, hospice workers, and individuals in professions ranging from software developers at Google to rubbish pickers, ensuring a holistic understanding of what makes and breaks a safe and fulfilling experience at the workplace.
From our research, we extracted three key insights that underpin the five actionable shifts that were recommended to Noora Health as an organisation. These shifts are strategic moves for Noora Health to address our nurses' needs more effectively and empower them as even more effective advocates for our caregiving mission. The shifts were disseminated to teams at the organisation through a series of workshops. The workshops were designed to enable our findings to be shared across the organisation, and to provide a space for each team to brainstorm ways in which they could incorporate the recommended shifts into their strategy and daily operations.
OUTCOMES
The project informed the design of Noora Health's health educator app for our nurses, as well as introducing more touch points in our operating model aimed at supporting our nurses. Beyond the internal shift, I outlined 7 principles for anyone designing products or services for nurses.
These principles are publicly available in the article below, click to read.
